Coaching is a one-on-one development process formally contracted between a coach and a management-level client to help achieve goals related to professional development and/or business performance.

That includes promotions, stretch assignments and other new challenges in which executives feel that a change in behavior – either for themselves or their team members – can make a significant difference in the long-term success of the organization. Executives usually seek coaching in the cases such as:

  • When they feel that an independent sounding board would be beneficial in helping them achieve a new level of performance, especially if close confidants are now reporting to them.
  • When they recognize that succeeding in a new role requires skills that they has not needed to rely on in the past; a coach may help sharpen those skills, particularly when they need to do so on the fly.
  • When efforts to change themselves, their team, or their company have failed – the executives are frustrated or burned out – a coach can be the outside expert to help them get to the root cause and make fundamental changes.
  • When they face the challenges of managing younger workers, a coach can help them better understand and lead a new generation of employees whose work ethics and values are different.

  • Coaching works better when the executive knows what he/she wants to get done. Coach can help you to figure out the solutions and increase skills to achieve the goal.
  • The executive who works together with the coach has to be open to feedback and willing to create positive change. If not, coaching may not be the answer.
